Phaselis Ancient City: The Story of Three Harbors

Phaselis: The Pearl of Ancient Lycia

Phaselis is a unique ancient city located 16 kilometers from Kemer district of Antalya, with a history dating back to the 7th century BC. Thanks to its three natural harbors, the city became one of the most important trade centers of antiquity.

Foundation and Historical Development

Phaselis was founded in 690 BC by Rhodian colonists. Thanks to its strategic location, the city quickly became one of the richest port cities in the region. With its three natural harbors (north, south, and middle harbor), it had the ability to accept ships in all weather conditions.

Alexander the Great's Visit

In 333 BC, Alexander the Great conquered Phaselis and spent the winter here. This visit is an important turning point in the city's history. Alexander recognized the strategic importance of the city and used it as an important base in his Persian campaign.

Roman Period

During the Roman Empire, Phaselis developed further and became an important port city. The city played a critical role in trade with Rome's eastern provinces. Many monumental structures were built in the city during this period.

Ancient Structures

Important structures that have survived to the present day in Phaselis include the theater, agora, bath, aqueducts, and main street. The theater is located on the northern slope of the city and has a capacity of approximately 3000 people. The main street is a monumental road 24 meters wide that connects the city's three harbors.

Three Harbor System

Phaselis's most important feature is its three natural harbors. The northern harbor was used for commercial ships. The southern harbor was reserved for military ships. The middle harbor was used for small boats and fishing vessels. This system allowed the city to operate in all weather conditions.

Natural Beauties

Phaselis is famous not only for its history but also for its natural beauty. The ancient city is located on a peninsula surrounded by pine forests. Its beaches, crystal-clear sea, and natural coves offer visitors a unique experience.

Phaselis Today

Today, Phaselis is one of Turkey's most important archaeological sites. It is visited by thousands of domestic and foreign tourists every year. The city is an ideal destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
